Newly freed Palestinian detainees burned Israeli-issued uniforms emblazoned with divisive symbols and slogans during a heated prisoner swap this weekend, igniting accusations of systemic dehumanization and violations of international norms.

Controversial Garments Spark Outrage
During the exchange of 369 Palestinians for three Israeli captives held in Gaza, released detainees were compelled to wear gray shirts featuring a prominent Star of David and the phrase “we will not forget or forgive” printed in Arabic. Many immediately turned the garments inside out to conceal the messaging, while others later set them ablaze upon reaching Khan Younis’ European Gaza Hospital, as documented in Al Jazeera footage.

Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad swiftly condemned the act, labeling it a “racist crime” intended to degrade prisoners. In a statement, Hamas accused Israel of violating humanitarian principles, contrasting it with their claimed “adherence to ethical treatment” of Israeli detainees.

Internal Israeli Criticism Emerges
The move also drew rare domestic criticism within Israel. An unnamed official cited by the Israeli Broadcasting Authority revealed that the country’s political leadership had not been consulted about the uniforms, which were reportedly mandated unilaterally by Israel’s Prison Commissioner, Kobi Yaacobi.

Broader Implications and Reactions
Mohamad Elmasry, a media studies professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, argued the incident reflects Israel’s broader strategy to “strip Palestinians of their humanity.” Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which mediated the transfer, urged greater respect for detainees’ dignity in future exchanges.

“While we continue advocating for humane and private transfers, all parties—including mediators—must prioritize improving these processes,” the ICRC emphasized in a Saturday statement.

Context of the Swap
The emotionally charged exchange followed days of strained negotiations amid Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza. While Israeli officials framed the shirt design as a symbolic gesture, Palestinians and human rights advocates decried it as a deliberate humiliation tactic, further inflaming tensions in the conflict-ridden region.

The incident has reignited debates about prisoner treatment under international law, with critics accusing Israel of weaponizing psychological abuse against detainees.
